Los filtros de líneas solo dejan pasar la luz de determinadas líneas espectrales de manera altamente selectiva. Los filtros OIII, SII y H-Alfa son especialmente populares.
Los números romanos III y II designan el grado de ionización del elemento químico que se genera en dicha línea espectral. Así, por ejemplo, OIII (leído "o tres") se refiere a oxígeno ionizado dos veces y SII a azufre ionizado una vez. OI y SI designan el átomo eléctricamente neutro.
Los filtros de líneas son ideales para la observación visual y la fotografía de nebulosas planetarias y de emisión y de restos de supernovas, ya que estos objetos generan unas líneas espectrales muy específicas. Los cúmulos estelares y las galaxias, por el contrario, muestran un espectro continuo. En estos casos es mejor usar filtros para atenuar la claridad del cielo en general (filtros CLS o UHC).
