In contrast to devices of the 1st or 2nd generation, digital night vision devices are based on the principle of a digital camera. Very light-sensitive sensors amplify the residual light. Some devices offer the possibility of taking photos or recording videos.

The second specification in a night vision device’s model number is the front lens diameter. The larger it is, the more light the night vision device collects.

Digital night vision devices use a different technology, which makes the devices much cheaper.

A head mount ensures the vision device is held steady in front of the eye. In addition, the hands are free for other tasks.

This allows the device to be mounted onto a standard photographic tripod with a 1/4" camera screw.

These devices may only be exposed to moderate moisture or light drops of water.
