This apochromatic refractor from the PhotoLine range consists of a dual-element objective lens with an air gap. This combines an Ohara (Japan) “extra-low dispersion” FPL53 lens with a lanthanum glass lens. This combination results in colour correction which rivals that of an FPL53 triplet, but with considerably faster cooling. Even at top magnifications, images remain clear of annoying colour aberrations. This means that the high-speed refractor is not only suitable for astrophotography and wide-field observations, but also for observing the Moon and planets!
The temperature-compensated, adjustable doublet lens sits securely in the sturdy aluminium lens tube. This has internal panels and excellent inner blackening for high-contrast images. The dew cap is retractable for transportation.
As if the exceptional optics were not enough, this apochromat also makes an impression with its drawtube. The ball-bearing-mounted, gear-driven, rotating 2.5” drawtube has micro-reduction and full-format illumination. Accessories can be attached using the internal thread, the 2” socket or the 1.25” socket.
The f/7 Photoline apochromat is fully suited to astrophotography but, as with any high-speed refractor, the field needs to be corrected so that the stars at the edge still appear nice and round. Some possible options are:
- TS Optics Flattener 1.0x M63 This corrector does not alter the focal length. With the TS Optics Adapter Adaptors M68/M63, it is screwed directly on to the M68x1 internal thread. The working distance from the M48 camera thread is 55 mm. Adaptation is also simple.
- TS Optics Reducer/Corrector Photoline 0,79x 3" This 0.79x corrector reduces the focal length to 564 mm and increases the aperture ratio to f/5.53. The working distance from the M48 thread is 56 mm. For a camera with a 55mm flange focal length simply use a M48 tuning ring with a height of 1mm. The corrector is attached using the M68 connection thread. Brightness and correction are suitable for all sensors up to full frame.
