Product description

More about the series Ultra Light...

Dobsonian telescopes are among the most practical instruments in astronomy. They are of simple construction and yet a brilliant idea. They essentially consist of two parts: firstly the optics, which in most cases is a solid tube or truss tube design; and secondly the mount, a wooden box (also called a 'rocker box') which sits on the ground and into which the telescope is inserted. This design allows you to begin observing sessions immediately without first having to spend time setting up and aligning a complicated mount. The basic idea of the Dobsonian design came from the wish to have a big telescope at a low price, a wish that has succeeded brilliantly. A true fan base has developed since the invention of the Dobsonian telescope which is dedicated to these instruments and their fascinating simplicity and to the idea of 'high performance at low price'.

Explore Scientific offers lightweight tubular aluminium frame which is optimised for transport and quick deployment.

  • The mount for the secondary mirror can securely adjusted without tools.
  • The primary mirror can be adjusted anteriorly during observation and sits within a modern cell with radial roller bearings and a 9-point flotation system
  • Large altitude bearings allow for quiver- and judder-free movements, even at large magnifications
  • The cap and altitude bearings fit inside the rockerbox, the mirrorbox has a lid for transportation, so that only two aluminium boxes and one bundle of poles have to be transported.
  • Extremely high structural rigidity!
  • Dew-resistant due to aluminium construction: No more bulging press boards thanks to exclusive use of aluminium and other metals
  • Two radial primary mirror fans for rapid temperature adjustment

New in the second generation:

  • Teflon sleeve bearings and GRP leading to very sensitive tracking
  • Improved primary mirror cell with precise adjustment mechanism
  • Double-sided friction settings and breaking system for altitude bearings
  • Large feet for increased stability
  • Universal viewfinder shoe for simple finderscope upgrading
  • 2 x 1.0kg counterweights included
  • Quick-release fasteners with spring elements for comfortable handling
  • Powder coated altitude bearings for increased durability
  • Laser engraved primary mirror centre mark

Dimensions for the 406/1826 Ultra Light:

  • Transportation: Rockerbox 550x550x330mm; Mirrorbox 480x480x300mm; Pole length approx. 1250mm
  • Eyepiece height whilst pointing at zenith: approx. 1.63m
  • Overall weight: 38.4kg; including mirror housing: 23.8kg; Upper section with secondary mirror + rockerbox: 10.5kg; 4 pairs of struts: 2.5kg; Pair of altitude bearings: 1.6kg

You would be hard pressed to find a more easily transportable telescope of this size, especially one with this level of adjustment stability and user friendliness. The latter of which is guaranteed by a very comprehensive user manual.

It not only matters which telescope you buy but also where you buy it. Our additional services:
