Product description

Finding astronomical objects more easily - a finder for your camera

Do you want to accurately put astronomical objects into your camera's field of view? You know, it's really not that straightforward, especially when you are photographing an extended nebula without a telescope. The Omegon finder for SLR cameras now lets you take care of this in a jiffy.

The advantages in a nutshell

  • LED finder for your camera - easily locate astronomical objects in the camera's viewfinder.
  • brightness adjustment - optionally a red or green dot, dimmable in 5 steps
  • anodised aluminium - high-quality workmanship - a finder which will faithfully accompany you for many years
  • precise alignment - alignment of the dot to your camera using two axes
  • fits onto your camera's hot shoe

Fits onto the camera's hot shoe
This LED finder fits into the hot shoe of your SLR camera like a glove. Line up on an object and know immediately where your camera is pointing. Many cameras' viewfinders are too dark, and other cameras only have a digital viewfinder. The chance of locating something is very small. The Omegon Hot Shoe Finder makes the world of astrophotographers just that bit easier.

You know just where you are with the red dot
Look through the finder and you will see a background of starry sky. A small red dot seems to float in front of this, showing you what the lens of your camera has in view.
The touch of a button lets you select one of five different brightness levels. Just set it to a comfortable brightness. And, by the way, for daytime photography you can also opt for a brighter green dot.

High quality used for the stars
This LED finder for your camera is ideal for astrophotography. It originally came from hunting technology, and you will notice this immediately - this metal finder is of excellently quality. A 40mm aperture gives you a relaxed view of your target. Astronomy fans have now discovered this quality for themselves. However, astronomers only shoot photos in the sky. And here too, there are a bull, hare and a lion.

Which astronomical objects are suitable for the hot shoe finder?
Large-scale objects particularly suitable for the stand-alone use of your camera. Whether it's the Californian nebula, the North American Nebula or the Andromeda Galaxy: Extended objects for which a telephoto lens is best suited. But of course you have to find them first!
Some amateur astronomers like to photograph objects from the city using an H-alpha filter. You have no chance to finding the object in the camera's viewfinder. But now you have the Omegon Hot Shoe Finder. This is very convenient and, from now on, will save you all time you previously spent in searching.

I am so happy with this Omegon Red Dot Finder and wish I had had some more information before I tried to set it up and use it. It's very precise and everything is included in the envelope that one needs to get going. In fact there was even a spare battery and a bag of jelly babies for me to munch on while trying to figure it out.

Firstly, ignore the flimsy bit of paper that is included. It goes on about guns (which I abhor) and I couldn't even read it without getting annoyed! So, download the pdf instruction file from the Omegon web site. The instructions are not perfect but get a B rating from me. The rest I worked out for myself.

Second, learn how to install properly in a camera hotshoe. There are two Allen keys provided - the small one is for tightening the hotshoe adapter into the camera hotshoe; and the large one is for tightening the rail base. Both of these must be done in sequence to ensure a really tight and firm placement. The unit is rock-solid if attached correctly.

Third, wait until daylight to test and adjust the unit. I tried at night and had nothing but grief and was on the point of sending it back! You will need to remove the screw caps from the two adjusters and need a coin or small screw-driver to turn the screws (lots of fiddly things to lose in the dark). I haven't had it long enough to know but assume once set up on a camera with a specific lens it will maintain the adjustment until the lens changes and/or put it on a different camera. Then set the camera up on a tripod and pick a small distant stationary object. Using the tripod adjustment place the centre of the camera focussing screen exactly on top of the selected object. Use the two fine adjustment screws to also get the green (or red) dot exactly on top of the object. Now, you may remove the camera from the tripod and just use the red do to find your subject - magic.

Of course it makes your rig much heavier but think it would work equally well with a gimbal head and large lenses. I can't wait to try and pinpoint some astro with it but need to wait for clear skies.

So, thank you to astroshop.eu for the great service - it arrived here in Scotland in a few days. I just wish I had had better instructions.
