Las lentes de Barlow alargan la distancia focal del telescopio. A menudo se usan para conseguir dos ampliaciones distintas con un único ocular. Al acoplar una lente de Barlow x2 a un ocular, se obtiene el doble de aumento.
En el caso de los telescopios astronómicos, la imagen se genera invertida con respecto a la horizontal y/o la vertical. Si bien no es relevante para la observación astronómica, es imprescindible para la terrestre. Las lentes de inversión proyectan la imagen del derecho y de pie.
